Brief

Stratford is well know for the 2012 Olympics and the arrival of Westfield shopping centre, however there is a lot more to the area that the council and the business and development district wanted to inform visitors about. This wayfinding scheme helped point people in new directions.

About the designs

An important part of the design process was researching Stratford as a place in a lot of detail. Searching through old photos with an aim to understand as much as possible about the heritage and culture of the place, one thing that stood out was the hustle and bustle of Stratford’s industry. Market places, the railway and the Bow porcelain factory played a large role in the sense of community and job prospects for locals.

Using the grid of old adverts and posters as inspiration, a new grid system was created; to decorate, to hold wayfinding information and updates about the changes happening to the local area. We created a toolbox of communication assets that honour the rich history of the area by using the traditional technique of letterpress, and a colour palette inspired by the local industry.
