This project started with a phone call. It was the height of lockdown and my flatmate joined a volunteer group who organise calls for people in need due to the pandemic. Her role was to have an informal chat with anyone vulnerable and who needed to talk. My flatmate found the first phone call harder than she anticipated. “It’s hard to know what to say, we’re complete strangers,” she said to me after the call. Her nominated vulnerable person was from a different generation, a different country, and whilst my flatmate wanted to help, she didn’t want to invade privacy or cause any offence.

Without thinking I asked, “Do you think people would like post instead?” And so Letters In Isolation came to life. A couple of Instagram posts later and I had a long excel list with stranger’s addresses that I had never seen before. I got busy posting over 100 letters around the UK and beyond, creating collages, poems and random notes of kindness.
